One More Time (OMT) is a South African startup tackling one of the fastest-growing environmental challenges: electronic waste. Their mission is simple but powerful — to rescue valuable materials from landfill and give them a second life through thoughtful, long-lasting design.
Each month, thousands of single-use vapes pass through OMT’s facility. While these devices are designed to be thrown away, many still contain fully functional lithium batteries. Instead of allowing these batteries to end up in landfill, OMT carefully recovers, tests, and repurposes them into reliable, rechargeable power banks — transforming waste into something genuinely useful.
Why lithium batteries?
Lithium batteries are very different from the disposable batteries you might find in a TV remote. They’re energy-dense, powerful, and increasingly common in everyday electronics — including disposable vapes.
When incorrectly disposed of, damaged, or crushed in landfill environments, lithium batteries pose a serious fire risk. Landfill fires caused by improperly discarded batteries are a growing global concern, making responsible recycling not just an environmental issue, but a safety one too.
