Sunflower Petals

The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual flower that grows up to four metres tall. The thick, hairy stem is topped with a large flower, which blooms between May and September and can be up to 30 cm in diameter. When young, these flowers can turn so that they always face the sun.

The sunflower is believed to be native to North America, but it now grows in many parts of the world, including Europe and Central America. Although the seeds are the most commonly used part of the plant, the golden yellow petals also have their uses. They have anti-inflammatory properties which soothe delicate and sensitive skin, and they also produce a natural yellow or orange dye.
