Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Where does Lush get organic olive oil?
Lush UK purchases this extra virgin grade of olive oil because the extraction process preserves the most flavour and nutrients from the fruits - and its beautiful green tint. The oil can come from four different organic sources, in Turkey, Lebanon, Sicily and Spain, Each of our suppliers positively impacts people and the environment in their own unique way.
Spain - This cooperative only started in 2011 and continues to grow by helping potential new members switch to organic farming. They’ve been doing tremendous work in regenerating the ecosystem in their olive groves and creating biodiverse landscapes, including collaborations with Birdlife Spain to reintroduce birds of prey in the region.
Sicily - Grown on the slopes of Mount Etna, local olive varieties benefit from the mineral-rich and fertile volcanic soil. Not only has our supplier been producing high-quality oil since the 1950s, but they also donate 5% of their profits to an international NGO that supports and improves the socio-economic integration of migrants arriving in Sicily.
Turkey - Humans, embracing nature as a whole, considering their footprint on earth and respecting all other forms of life – this is the dream of our Turkish olive oil supplier. Since their establishment in 2002, they have worked for the preservation of birds and biodiversity with their thousands of members and volunteers, and in collaboration with an international conservation NGO.
Lebanon - Some of the oldest olive trees in the world are located in Lebanon (up to 6000 years old), with the average Lebanese olive tree being 150 years old. If only they could talk! Over the past 45 years, olives have become such an important crop in the country that they’ve surpassed wheat. Our local supplier has made their land a haven for birds and focuses on supporting biodiversity, and protecting and preserving wildlife.
What are the benefits of olive oil for the skin and hair?
- Readily absorbed, it offers lightweight moisture.
- It protects and conditions the skin and hair, improving their strength.
- It gives the skin a healthy glow.
- It makes the hair shine.
The oil’s lightweight feel is due to its squalene content, a compound that can also be found in human sebum. ‘Accepted’ well by the skin, it allows the oil to help restore a healthy level of moisture.
