Murumuru Butter
Found in the Amazon rainforest, Astrocaryum murumuru is a tall and spiny evergreen palm with a thick trunk and a shuttlecock-shaped crown. The nutritious, edible fruits are an important local food source and the many materials made from the tree are commercially significant to the region. The seed oil is traditionally used to soften and protect the hair.
With a similar colour, consistency and melting point to cocoa butter, murumuru has a unique fatty acid composition. It contains around 47% of lauric acid, which lends antimicrobial properties. It is also an excellent source of oleic acid and essential fatty acids omega-6 and omega-3, which help calm inflammation and promote wound healing.
Lush purchase murumuru butter from a Brazilian supplier. We also source cold-pressed butter from a community that collects the seeds in the wild, based in Brazil as well. As they can only supply us with small quantities, their butter is often used in limited edition products.
